You capture so well how Friedman’s narrow idea of freedom paved the way for Project 2025’s authoritarianism. Both depend on isolating people so shock policies can slip through. What gives me hope is the resistance already growing—workers organizing, neighbors supporting each other, communities leading on climate and health. Alone these efforts seem small, but together they point to a freer, more humane future built on solidarity and dignity.
I've been thinking about the Shock Doctrine a lot lately, so thanks for laying it out so clearly. The disheartening thing is that there are people in power who think this is a good thing.
It’s good for the people in power and their families. It’s not good for the people (their supporters included). The day Trump supporters see this happening, is the day we need to bring them on board as allies. Do not alienate anyone. They need us and we need them.
Thank you for your summary of Project 2025 economics. The expectation is that people will fall in line. That deregulation will cause businesses to use profits for good not greed. This type of textbook economics can’t work in the real world 🌎 without control of all areas of society. The Project 2025 playbook is a perfect textbook.
Another post making both distressing and yet hopeful sense of the relentless authoritarianism. Rarely have Friedman and Naomi Klein been applied to the present so effectively. Greenberg never stops with the negative; rather he always offers encouragement to resist.
Damn James, you have done it again! I must also point out GH Bush sent the "Chicago boys" To Moscow to "help" with the transition to the capitalistic system and that turned out so great for the oligarchs which were the old communist party bosses.
Thank you James for reminding us that solidarity and community are antidotes to neoliberal thought and power. Margaret Thatcher famously said there is no such thing as society, no? Thank you again for reminding us all that if we cannot recognize the monster, we cannot fight it.

I've said this for years. I have observed capitalism running roughshod over democracy since at least the 80s.
